Telomeres are the caps on the ends of our chromosomes. They were thought to only shorten with age — and never grow back. On plant-based diets they have lengthened. Ornish’s plant-based program raised telomerase in three months and, at five years, telomeres were longer while the comparison group’s got shorter. Li and colleagues found healthy plant-based eating tied to longer telomeres. In the Nurses’ Health Study, a plant-rich Mediterranean pattern was tied to longer telomeres among 4,676 women. In identical twins, eight weeks vegan slowed several epigenetic aging clocks. Women who ate the most plant protein in midlife were 46% more likely to reach older age without major disease. Vegans in one senior study were prescribed about 58% fewer drugs. Aging clocks look better when we choose not to harm or kill animals.

Telomeres are the caps on the ends of chromosomes. They were thought to only shorten with age, and not grow back. Ornish followed men with low-risk prostate cancer on a plant-based lifestyle program. At three months they had more telomerase, the enzyme that rebuilds telomeres. At five years their telomeres were longer; the comparison group’s were shorter. Small sample, and the program also included walking and stress care. Even so: a marker that was supposed to only run down ran the other way.
Other studies keep finding longer telomeres on plant-rich plates
Li and colleagues, 2024: a plant-based pattern rich in vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and legumes was associated with longer telomeres; a junk-plant pattern was not. Crous-Bou and colleagues in the Nurses’ Health Study: among 4,676 women, closer adherence to a plant-rich Mediterranean pattern was associated with longer telomeres. A 2025 review in Nutrients collected more of the same observational work. The Ornish trial is the one that showed lengthening. The larger studies show the same direction.
Identical twins: eight weeks vegan, slower aging clocks
The Twins Nutrition Study put one twin on a vegan diet and the other on an omnivore diet for eight weeks. Only the vegan group showed a drop in epigenetic age acceleration — GrimAge, PhenoAge, DunedinPACE. System scores for inflammation, heart, liver, and metabolism eased too. It is a short trial in a small group. The clocks still moved.
More plants, slower GrimAge — unless the plants are junk
Kim and colleagues scored four plant-based diet indices against epigenetic clocks. Overall, provegetarian, and healthy plant scores were linked with slower GrimAge2. An “unhealthy plant” score — fries and soda counting as plants — was not. The signal is vegetables, beans, and whole grains, not vegan cookies.
Midlife plant protein, healthier old age — 48,000 women
In the Nurses’ Health Study, women who ate the most plant protein in midlife were 46% more likely to reach older age with fewer chronic diseases, better mobility, and less cognitive decline. More protein from meat and dairy was linked with more chronic disease. Protein is not the question. The source is.
One month was enough to shift aging-related methylation
A one-month vegan trial changed DNA methylation patterns tied to immune cells, inflammation, and two clocks used to predict health outcomes. That is not a lifetime proof. It is a fast biological response.
Older vegans were on 58% fewer prescriptions
In the Polypharma Study of seniors, a vegan diet was linked with 58% fewer prescription drugs than a non-vegetarian diet, after adjustment. One study. Fewer pills in older age is a blunt signal of aging with fewer diagnosed problems that doctors treat with drugs.
