12%Lower all-cause mortality for vegetarians in AHS-2
In Adventist Health Study-2, among about 73,000 people, vegetarian patterns had about 12% lower all-cause mortality than meat-eaters. Swapping animal protein for plant protein tracks with lower death rates in large U.S. cohorts — about 10% lower overall mortality in the NIH-AARP model when animal protein is replaced with plant protein, with a larger drop when the animal protein being replaced was eggs or red meat. Meat — especially processed — is the side of the swap that goes the wrong way. We live longer when we choose not to harm or kill animals.

Adventists who skipped meat died less often
Orlich and colleagues followed 73,308 Adventists. Vegetarian patterns had 12% lower all-cause mortality than meat-eaters. Vegans sat at 0.85 (the interval just included 1.0). Pesco-vegetarians were lowest. The clearer drops were in heart, kidney, and endocrine deaths, and the signal was stronger in men. Adventists already smoke less. Even in that group, leaving meat off the plate still showed up.
More animal protein, more deaths. More plant protein, fewer deaths.
Song and colleagues tracked decades of U.S. nurses and male health professionals. More animal protein, especially from red meat, tracked with higher death rates. More plant protein tracked with lower ones. The contrast is the source, not “protein.”
More plant protein instead of animal protein, fewer deaths
Huang’s NIH-AARP analysis measured what happens when animal protein is replaced with plant protein. That replacement was linked with about 10% lower overall mortality in men and in women. The drop was larger when the animal protein being replaced was eggs or red meat. The pattern is the swap itself — plant protein instead of animal protein — not a suggestion to stop at a small slice. This site argues for swapping all of it.
Meta-analysis: extra plant protein, fewer deaths
Naghshi and colleagues pooled 715,128 people. Plant protein was linked with lower all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. In their dose-response model, more plant protein tracked with fewer deaths. Animal protein did not earn that protection. Dinu’s vegan all-cause pool sat at 0.88 with a wide interval — two cohorts, same direction, not a closed case.

Orlich et al., JAMA Internal Medicine 2013: 73,308 Adventists. All vegetarians combined had 12% lower all-cause mortality than nonvegetarians (HR 0.88). Vegans 0.85 (CI 0.73–1.01), pesco-vegetarians 0.81. Links were clearer for cardiovascular, kidney, and endocrine deaths, and stronger in men. Observational — Adventists already tend to skip smoking.

Song et al.: decades of U.S. cohort data. Higher animal protein was linked with higher mortality, especially in people who already had a risk factor. Higher plant protein went the other way. The extra risk sat mainly with red meat.

The researchers used a 3% energy increment as a unit of measurement, not as a recommended stopping point. The drop was larger when the animal protein being replaced was eggs or red meat.
