Canine teeth do not make us hunters. Tools do.

Without tools or weapons, a human cannot hurt or kill an animal. Our teeth and nails do not go through hide, fur, feathers, or connective tissue. Raw flesh is hard to chew without cooking, and unseasoned meat is mostly bland, meanwhile nearly every plant food has a unique taste to our tastebuds. All monkeys and apes have forward-facing eyes and larger canines than we do. Geladas, howlers, colobus, gorillas, and orangutans live on grasses, leaves, and fruit. Pandas have large canine teeth and claws and only eat plants. Black bears and inland brown and grizzly bears get about 80–90% of their diet from plants. A dead animal does not look or smell appetizing to most humans — it looks and smells disgusting. We do not have to harm or eat animals at all.

Without tools, a human does not take down a large animal

Human nails are thin and flat. They do not go through fur, hide, feathers, or connective tissue. Human teeth are short and blunt next to a cat’s; they do not open a hide. A lion does not need a knife. We do. The Smithsonian notes that people used stone tools for more than 2 million years to cut and pound food — including meat — and wooden spears for large animals appear around 500,000 years ago. Those dates are sometimes treated as proof that we were meant to eat meat. They show the opposite. Without a manufactured edge, a human cannot open a hide or take down a cow. Raw flesh is also hard to chew. Wrangham writes that most raw meat is too tough to eat easily — cooking is what made it workable. Unseasoned meat is mostly bland. Salt, herbs, and sauces do the flavor work, and those are plants. The body is not built to hunt, skin, or enjoy a carcass on its own. The tools and the kitchen are.

Forward-facing eyes and big fangs are a primate look — not a hunting license

All living primates have forward-facing eyes — every monkey and ape included. Depth perception helps a primate judge a branch, not a hunting license. Male geladas, mandrills, baboons, gorillas, and orangutans have canines much larger than ours — used mainly as display and defense, not as steak knives. Geladas eat grass about 90% of the time. Howler monkeys and colobus monkeys live on leaves. Orangutans live mostly on fruit. Chimpanzees, bonobos, and baboons are the exceptions people name because they hunt. Meat is still only about 1–2% of a wild chimpanzee’s diet. Baboon animal food is a small opportunistic share. In bonobos, isotopes show fauna is a marginal protein source — plants do that job. Giant pandas kept carnivoran canines and claws and eat almost only bamboo. Hippos have tusk-like canines and eat grass. Most monkeys and apes do not even have claws. They have nails, like us, and those nails still do not open a hide. If fangs and binocular vision meant “meant to kill,” the gelada would hunt like a wolf. It spends the day in a grass patch.

Bears have the claws — and still eat about 80–90% plants

For inland grizzlies and brown bears, the National Wildlife Federation puts vegetation at about 80 to 90 percent — roots, tubers, grasses, berries. Yellowstone grizzlies ate 162 plant species; claws up to 10 cm dig biscuitroot as often as they open a carcass. Black bears get most of their diet from berries, fruit, and sedges. Coastal brown bears eat more salmon — that is a fish run, not a hunting pedigree. The animals used as a mascot for “we have canines so we hunt” spend much of the year in a berry patch.

Our jaws grind side to side. A cat’s only chop.

A cat’s jaw is a hinge. It goes up and down so carnassial teeth can scissor flesh. It barely moves sideways. A human jaw sits above the tooth row, with a disc that lets the mandible slide forward and side to side. That is how molars crush and grind. Our incisors are spade-shaped. Our canines are small and blunt and work like extra incisors. Our molars are squarish and bumpy — grinding stones, not blades. Milton Mills’s comparison is the same picture dentists see every day: this mouth is built to pulp plants, not to shear a hide.

We cool by sweating through the skin. Cats and dogs pant.

Humans dump heat through eccrine sweat glands over the body. Cats and dogs have few of those glands. They cool by panting — evaporating water off the tongue and mouth. The other famous sweaters are horses and some other primates, both plant-eaters. A body that runs in the heat of the day, sweating from the skin, is a daytime forager’s body, not a night hunter’s.

We see ripe fruit in color. We do not have a hunter’s night eye.

Old World monkeys, apes, and humans see reds and greens. Dominy and Lucas argue that trichromatic color vision helps a primate pick ripe fruit and young leaves out of a green canopy. Dogs and cats are dichromats — they see some color, mostly in the blue-yellow range, not the full red-green map we use on a berry. We also lack a tapetum lucidum, the mirror behind the retina that makes a cat’s eyes glow and helps it hunt at night. Haplorhine primates, including us, are daytime animals. The eye is a fruit-and-leaf eye, not a midnight predator’s.

We cannot make vitamin C. We have to eat plants for it.

Most mammals make their own vitamin C. Humans, other anthropoid primates, guinea pigs, and some fruit bats lost a working GULO gene, so ascorbic acid has to come from food. Fresh muscle is a poor source. Fruit, leaves, and other plants are the reliable ones. A species that cannot make vitamin C is a species that stayed close to plants.

The mouth starts on starch. The gut is long.

Human saliva contains amylase, the enzyme that begins starch digestion in the mouth. Perry and colleagues found extra copies of the AMY1 gene in humans, and more copies in high-starch populations. Carnivores do not need that. Mills notes a human gut on the order of ten to eleven times body length — in the plant-eater range, not the short carnivore tube. Beasley puts baseline human stomach pH near 1.5, in the same neighborhood as a rabbit. We sleep at night with other daytime primates. Lions eat meat and stay lions. The human staple worldwide is still starch: rice, wheat, corn, potatoes, beans.

Most people flinch at a carcass — cuisine covers that up

Ask someone if they would hurt a dog, a cow, a chicken with their hands. Most people say no. Pew found that 97% of U.S. pet owners call the animal family. Loughnan, Bastian, and Haslam describe the meat paradox: people care about animals and also eat them, then hide the body, deny the mind, and rename the dead animal as food. The first instinct is not to kill. It is to pull back. Without a weapon, most of us could not take an animal down anyway. Appetite for a steak is often appetite for a story told after the blood is rinsed off.

Our eyes advertise where we look. A stalker would hide that.

Humans have white sclera. Kobayashi and Kohshima, and later Tomasello, argue that the whites of the eyes make gaze easy to read — useful for cooperation, not for sneaking up on prey. A cat’s eye does not flash a white target. Ours does. We also sleep through the night. The body is set up for a social daytime animal that shares attention, not for a silent hunter.

Cooked starch helped feed the growing human brain

Hardy and colleagues argue that glucose-hungry brain tissue needed cooked starch, not just muscle meat. Lions eat meat and stay lions. Humans made porridge, rice, bread, and tubers the global staple. The genome already shows extra salivary amylase. The kitchen shows grain, tuber, and bean as the world’s main plate. Brain growth is less plausible as a meat-only story.

People who don’t eat animals are healthier — open the Health pages

The anatomy argument is not a museum piece. In living humans, the people who skip meat and other animal products show the lowest measured risks of heart disease, the lowest overall cancer risk in recent comparisons, the lowest type 2 diabetes risk, and lower obesity. The only diets shown to reverse coronary plaque in humans had no meat. Endurance work — including the old Yale tests — went to vegetarians. Dementia risk tracks with processed meat; plant patterns go the other way. That is the Health cluster on this site: Heart, Cancer, Diabetes, Weight, Strength, Endurance, Brain. Tools and food — Smithsonian Human Origins

The Smithsonian notes that early humans used stone tools for more than 2 million years to cut, pound, and crush food, including meat from large animals, and that wooden spears for killing large animals appear around 500,000 years ago. That is not a hunting pedigree. A cat does not need a blade. Those tools exist because hands and teeth cannot open a hide or take down a large animal. The record is of a body that needed weapons, not of a body built to kill.

Milton Mills, M.D.: humans lack carnassial shear teeth, have grinding molars packed close, and blunt canines that work more like extra incisors. Nails are flattened, not claws. Best and Kamilar: eccrine glands over the body surface are a catarrhine primate trait, expanded in humans. Wikipedia’s overview: dogs and other mammals with few sweat glands cool by panting. Horses and some primates also sweat — plant-eaters, not cats. Skin-wide sweating is a daytime-forager cooling system.

Richard Wrangham: many plant foods are too fibrous raw, and most raw meat is too tough to chew easily. Cooking is a human biological trait, not a garnish. Without heat, flesh is hard to eat. Hill and Dunbar compared baboon populations: diets are dominated by fruit, leaves, and subterranean plant foods. Animal matter is a much smaller share and did not track climate the way plant foods did. Baboons take meat and insects when they can. They do not live on it.

Nie et al.: giant pandas are specialized herbivores that feed almost exclusively on bamboo, despite descending from meat-eating carnivorans. They kept the clade’s canines and still live on plants. Canine teeth reflect ancestry, not current diet.

Mountain gorillas eat leaves — and have the biggest primate fangs

Rothman et al.: mountain gorilla diets are overwhelmingly plant — leaves the majority of the year, fruit when it is there. Male canines are used for display, not for cutting meat. Forward-facing eyes come with being a primate in a three-dimensional world, not with hunting like a wolf.

Neitz, Geist, and Jacobs: behavioral tests show dogs have two cone types, not three. They see some color (blue-yellow), not the red-green discrimination humans use on berries.
